Five steps to your first reading session

From zero to reading at speed in under five minutes.

1

Download and open

Grab Accruva from the Play Store, App Store, or our Windows download page. Open the app, create your account (or skip for now — you can sign up later).

Tip: The free tier is fully functional. No credit card needed.
2

Import your first document

Tap the + button and choose how to bring in your text: upload a PDF, EPUB, or DOCX from your files, paste from your clipboard, or scan a physical page with the camera (OCR). Eight formats supported.

Tip: Start with something short — an article or a single chapter. Get comfortable with the flow before diving into a 300-page textbook.
3

Choose your reading mode

Try Focus (RSVP) for speed, Teleprompter for a gentler flow, Chunking for dense material, Bold Flow for context, or Scroll for free-form reading. Not sure which fits? Start with Teleprompter — it’s the most approachable.

Tip: If you have ADHD, try the Zen Mode immediately. Black screen, single word, zero distractions.
4

Set your speed

Start at 200–250 WPM (about average reading speed) and gradually increase. The slider lets you adjust in real time. You’ll be surprised how quickly your brain adapts. Free tier goes up to 400 WPM; Pro unlocks up to 1,000.

Tip: Comprehension matters more than speed. If you can’t remember what you just read, slow down 50 WPM.
5

Generate study material

After reading, tap the AI tools: generate a quiz to test yourself, create flashcards for spaced repetition, or get a summary with key terms. Your document just became a complete study session.

Tip: AI-generated flashcards feed directly into SM-2 spaced repetition. Your review schedule is built automatically.

Which reading mode is right for you?

Quick guide to choosing the best mode for your needs.

Focus (RSVP)

Single-word display with ORP highlighting. Maximum speed, minimum distraction. Start here if speed is your primary goal.

Best for: Speed training, short articles, familiar material

Teleprompter

Smooth scrolling with word highlighting. Less intense than RSVP. Keeps surrounding text visible for context.

Best for: Beginners, casual reading, longer sessions

Chunking

Smart phrase groups with line-aware boundaries. Processes text in natural semantic units instead of individual words.

Best for: Academic material, dyslexic readers, dense text

Bold Flow

Bold prefix on every word at three intensity levels. Guides your eye while keeping full text visible. Auto or manual scroll.

Best for: Long-form reading, reports, keeping context

Scroll

Free-form scrollable text with highlights, notes, and bookmarks. Read at your own pace and annotate as you go.

Best for: Deep study, annotation-heavy sessions

ADHD / Zen Mode

Pure black screen, single word, hidden controls. Eliminates all visual competition for your attention. Free.

Best for: ADHD, focus difficulty, sensory overwhelm

Tips for getting the most out of Accruva

A few things we’ve learned from watching thousands of reading sessions.

Start slower than you think

Most new users set the speed too high and get discouraged. Begin at 200–250 WPM and increase by 25 WPM every few sessions. Your brain will adapt faster than you expect.

Use different modes for different material

There’s no single “best” mode. Use Focus for quick reads, Chunking for dense academic text, and Scroll when you need to annotate deeply. Switching modes is instant.

Generate flashcards immediately after reading

The best time to create flashcards is right after you finish a reading session, while the material is fresh. One tap generates them from the document and feeds them into spaced repetition.

Build the streak habit

Even five minutes a day counts toward your reading streak. The daily habit is more valuable than occasional marathon sessions. The gamification is there to help — use it.
